Citizen: An American Lyric | 3 | 2020 Countdown

Welcome to Day 22 of my 2020 Book Spotlight Countdown! For more information about this series, please read my introductory post here. Today, I’m celebrating Citizen: An American Lyric by Claudia Rankine!

3rd of 2020

Stretching the boundaries of poetry, Rankine’s poem-essay hybrid addresses racism in America, discussing the aggressions faced by people of colour in the 21st Century. Rankine creates an argument throughout the poem, addressing ideas of citizenship and belonging, and the ways these are intrinsically intertwined with race, despite living in a supposedly “post-race” society.

If you want to branch out from the well recommended fiction and non-fiction focusing on race and read something presented in a unique format, Citizen might be for you.
